Original Duckhead has been one of my longest-running and most consistent Shopify client relationships and one of the best examples of why a custom theme can become the right technical choice as a brand grows.
I began working with Original Duckhead in 2022, initially customising a purchased Shopify theme based on an existing Figma design and the brand's creative direction. At that stage, my work was focused on Shopify implementation: adapting the store to match the agreed visual direction and support ongoing storefront improvements.
As those changes became more frequent, the limitations of relying on a store-bought Shopify theme became clearer. The theme could be customised, but each layer of custom code made future updates harder. Over time, the store needed something lighter, more flexible, and easier to manage long term.
That eventually led to supporting the move onto a custom Shopify theme.
Why The Purchased Theme Became Limiting
Purchased Shopify themes can be a good starting point, especially early in a store's life. They provide ready-made layouts, settings, and core ecommerce features without needing a fully custom build from day one.
The tradeoff appears later.
When a store has been heavily customised, major theme updates often require custom code to be re-applied manually. That can become time-consuming and risky, especially when the store depends on tailored sections, custom styling, bespoke JavaScript, and ongoing visual updates.
For Original Duckhead, the brand was moving quickly. New campaigns, new products, visual refinements, content updates, and future rebrands all needed a more controlled technical foundation.
The custom theme helped support that.
Building A Lighter Custom Theme
The new theme was built using:
- HTML
- CSS
- JavaScript
- AJAX
- Shopify Liquid
- SplideJS for sliders
The focus was performance, flexibility, and clean front-end implementation.
Instead of carrying the overhead of a larger third-party theme, the custom theme could be shaped around the storefront experience Original Duckhead needed. This made it easier to optimise speed, refine usability, support design changes, and build features in a way that matched the brand rather than fighting against an inherited theme structure.
With further brand work and visual updates on the horizon, having a custom-built theme in place has made the storefront easier to adapt from a technical point of view. The brand can evolve without needing every change to be worked around the restrictions of a third-party template.
Supporting A Growing Brand
Original Duckhead has grown significantly since the early stages of the partnership.
Alongside theme development, I continue to support the store through regular updates, storefront improvements, feature work, and general Shopify theme maintenance as the business grows.
The brand has developed into a six-figure-per-year business and grown to the point of upgrading to Shopify Plus. That growth is the result of Original Duckhead's product, brand, retail, wholesale, ecommerce, and operational work. My contribution has been on the Shopify side: helping ensure the storefront has a technical foundation that can keep up with continued momentum.
Publicly, Original Duckhead has also become a much more widely recognised ecommerce brand. Shopify has featured the business in its own content, including a retail strategy article that discusses the brand's growth, retail-first approach, and direct-to-consumer expansion. Shopify also selected Original Duckhead as one of its homepage design examples, highlighting the strength of the brand's ecommerce presentation.
That recognition matters because it shows the wider Original Duckhead brand and ecommerce experience has become strong enough to be used as a public example. From a development point of view, the custom theme work supports that experience by giving the store a flexible and maintainable Shopify foundation.
Public Growth And Brand Recognition
Original Duckhead's public growth story is now much bigger than a simple Shopify build.
The brand is known for colourful, sustainable umbrellas and reusable bags, with a clear mission around reducing throwaway umbrella culture. Its own site highlights sustainability messaging, including recycled materials and the number of post-consumer plastic bottles recycled through its products.
Shopify's retail strategy article describes Original Duckhead's growth through wholesale partnerships, product-market fit, retail relationships, and eventual ecommerce expansion. It also highlights major retail partnerships, including MoMA and Kew Gardens, and reports that the brand hit approximately 1,000 units a day in 2024 with 100% year-over-year growth.
Original Duckhead's press page also shows wider recognition from major publications and shopping guides, including The Guardian, The Strategist, The New York Times Wirecutter, CNN Underscored, Business Insider, Wired, Stylist, Refinery29, and others.
This gives the case study more weight: the Shopify theme work supports a brand that has grown beyond a small ecommerce store into a widely recognised sustainable product business.
Shopify Homepage Design Recognition
Original Duckhead was also featured in Shopify's homepage design examples.
Shopify highlighted the way the brand uses clean, retro-inspired homepage design, lifestyle photography, simple navigation, and product-led sections to help customers understand the brand and shop quickly.
That is especially relevant to this case study because homepage design is not only about visual taste. For a product-led brand like Original Duckhead, the homepage needs to communicate style, sustainability, product range, collaborations, trust, and shopping routes without becoming cluttered.
The custom theme supports that from a Shopify implementation point of view by giving the brand more control over layout, sections, imagery, and performance.
Bundle Builder And Custom Store Features
As the site evolved, the work also moved beyond standard theme development.
One important example is the bundle builder experience. Original Duckhead uses bundles to help customers shop matching umbrellas, bags, and related products together. From a Shopify development point of view, this kind of feature is useful because it can support product discovery, gifting, and a more guided shopping journey.
For ID_within, this is also a useful portfolio example because it shows how a custom storefront feature can start as client implementation work and later inform reusable Shopify theme or app ideas.
Ongoing Website Management
The partnership has not been a one-off build.
Original Duckhead continues to need regular support as products, content, collaborations, design direction, and Shopify requirements change.
Ongoing work includes:
- Theme updates
- Design refinements
- Storefront improvements
- Performance-focused adjustments
- Feature support
- Product and content layout changes
- General Shopify theme maintenance
- Support for future rebrands and launches
That ongoing relationship is part of what makes the custom theme valuable. It gives the store a maintainable technical foundation that can keep changing with the business.
What This Project Demonstrates
Original Duckhead is a strong case study because it shows the point where custom theme development can become more practical than continually extending a purchased theme.
The project demonstrates:
- Customising an existing Shopify theme from a Figma design
- Identifying when a purchased theme had become limiting
- Supporting the move onto a custom Shopify theme
- Building a lighter and more maintainable front-end foundation
- Supporting performance and usability improvements
- Creating a storefront that can adapt through visual updates and rebrands
- Supporting a growing Shopify Plus brand from a Shopify development perspective
- Building custom ecommerce features such as bundles
- Providing ongoing Shopify support rather than a single handover
The biggest lesson is that the right theme decision changes as a business grows.
A purchased theme can help a store get started, but a growing brand with frequent design changes, custom features, and long-term performance needs may eventually need a custom foundation. For Original Duckhead, that custom foundation has made the Shopify storefront easier to maintain, easier to improve, and better suited to ongoing brand and ecommerce changes.
