I joined CreatorVC in 2021 to take over the development and management of their Shopify websites for documentary crowdfunding campaigns. CreatorVC is an independent documentary production company that had previously relied on Kickstarter and other fundraising platforms to launch and fund its projects. By the time I came on board, the business had already attempted to transition to Shopify, but the platform had passed through two developers and was facing major operational issues, particularly around stock control and fulfilment.
This was a significant problem because CreatorVC’s model differs from a standard e-commerce setup. Rather than selling products held in ready-to-ship inventory, the business operates around campaign-driven pre-orders, with customers backing projects that may take to years to complete before fulfilment begins. When I joined, the existing setup was not robust enough to support that model effectively, and stock management had become so unreliable that it was close to creating serious fulfilment issues around In Search of Darkness Part II.
My first involvement came during a flash sale, where I quickly reworked key areas of the storefront and helped overhaul the way inventory and fulfilment were handled with their fulfilment partner. From there, my role expanded into a long-term redevelopment of the platform, focused on creating a more stable, scalable, and campaign-ready Shopify experience that could support CreatorVC’s growth.
Over the following years, I worked across a number of major releases, including In Search of Darkness Part III, FPS: First Person Shooter, In Search of Tomorrow, Aliens Expanded, The Thing Expanded, and In Search of Darkness: 1990 - 1994 & 95 - 99. These campaigns helped strengthen CreatorVC’s reputation for producing successful documentary launches with a highly engaged audience, and my role was to ensure the digital storefront could support that momentum with a dependable and purpose-built e-commerce experience.
From a technical perspective, the platform evolved considerably during my time with the company. When I started, the store was still running on Shopify’s Debut theme using the older Online Store architecture. During Shopify’s transition to Online Store , I first migrated the site to Dawn as an interim step, then went on to design and develop a completely custom Shopify theme tailored specifically to CreatorVC’s needs. That custom theme has been used since Aliens Expanded and In Search of Darkness: 1990–1994, ISOD 95 - 99 & The Thing Expanded, providing a far more flexible foundation for campaign launches, rich content presentation, pre-order product structures, and more complex stock and fulfilment workflows.
My work with CreatorVC has gone well beyond theme development alone. It has included storefront architecture, campaign landing pages, custom Shopify theme development, stock management strategy, fulfilment coordination, and ongoing platform improvement. The end result is a fully custom Shopify solution built around the specific demands of documentary crowdfunding, one that replaced an unstable setup and became a reliable foundation for some of CreatorVC’s most important campaigns.
At the time of writing, the most recent campaign was The Thing Expanded (March - April 2026), which had entered its final backer phase.
